The high pressure is proving difficult for most of the fleet, with frustrating variable and light winds in the south and a continuous beat for those from Pwllheli. The good news this morning is that despite these conditions WESTERLY WAY, sailed by Justin Butler, made a fast passage and arrived at Baltimore this morning. He found wind by tacking well to the south of the Scillies.
Other sailors have been less lucky and 13 have now retired, all for sound and well considered reasons. Two were contingencies known in advance and one suffered serious sail damage. Very light winds can be hard on boats as well as making it difficult to sail safe routes.
As the high pressure drifts north the wind will disappear, but tomorrow (always tomorrow…) the southern edge of the system should provide Easterlies that will be a relief to all those sailing.
